This month of March, the church is looking at a wonderful topic. We are in a new season. Every child of God should be able to discern and understand what is happening in and around him.

This month we are considering TIME & SEASONS.

Psalms 32:9 [Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.]

In many places in scriptures, we are told of animals to learn from. In Proverbs 6 we are instructed to learn from the ants. Now God is asking us in Psalms 32 to learn from the horse. A horse can move and walk by itself, but if you want it to run or move faster, you do either of two things;

  1. Use the bits in the mouth of the horse,
  2. Whip the horse.

If you don’t do either of these two, it would merely be taking it slow and steady. So until you do something, you want to get what you desire. That’s the picture God is painting. God is saying we should not be like the horses who don’t have understanding until something happens.

A lot of people sleep and are unwilling to do the right thing until something happens.

Some people don’t learn until they lose all. For example, the current money scam that’s currently going on – several people have lost money as a result of it. A whole lot of people don’t have understanding until they fall into calamity. Others don’t understand until affliction comes.

So God is saying, ‘Why don’t you understand what I’m telling you?’

God wants to bless us more than we are willing to be blessed, but we need to understand the times.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 [To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God. I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him. That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.]

The Psalmist understood this and said my time is in God’s hands. Time talks about measurement, about space, about one point to the other. IT also talks about events, about what is happening, spiritually and physically.

King Solomon, a truly wise man, made us understand that there is a time for everything and the children of God are to know the time. In the word, one time, God was angry at His children. During that period, while they were trying to reconcile with God, one of the children went and committed sexual immorality. He was slain simply because he did not understand the time they were in.

There was a man during the time of Jesus who knew when the time to speak up came about. He cried out, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me.’ The enemy who knew his breakthrough was now, wanted him to shut up. But the man understood the importance of the time and the bible says he shouted the more. And Jesus attended to him.

Every child of God is expected to understand timing.

A man took his children to a location and he wanted his children to be careful not be entangled with the people of the new location because their culture, ways, and mannerisms were different from theirs. One of them who did not understand the time, Dinah, went out. When she went out, the man who wasn’t meant to see her saw her and defiled her.

Learn to understand the time, space, the culture, and the happenings.

A story once goes like this, a Christian girl was to celebrate her 18th birthday. A guy approached her, another supposed Christian. She left Lagos to Port Harcourt to meet with him and they fornicated. She wasn’t even aware when she became pregnant. When you don’t understand your timing – she was sent to school to read, but a lack of understanding led her astray.

In scriptures, it was the time to bring forth fruits. He walked to the fig tree and did not receive any fruits. A lack of understanding made the tree receive a curse.

Christians are not conscious of the little foxes spoiling the vine because of a lack of understanding of the times.

1 Chronicles 12:32 [And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.]

Emphasis is on ‘WHICH WERE MEN.’: Now the men are not leading anymore. The women and children drag the men to church. Every step every decision is a seed that will germinate one day. Where the men? The women? The children? Where are they? This is 2017, March. Where are the men? Do we take stock of our lives? Do we sit down to determine – where am I in all ramifications of my life? On a scale of 1-10, am I growing? Am I where I used to be?

2 Timothy 3:1 [You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. NLT]

It’s a difficult time to say to people that you are a Christian. Because there is so much attack on our faith. A story goes thus; a pastor who used to be in the printing press had to step down because of the corruption needed for you to thrive in the industry. The times we are in need you to be corrupt. There is so much temptation all around us. Job declared that he has made a covenant with his eyes not to look lustfully at a lady. This is the time to be different. This is the best time to showcase Christianity.

This is the best time to make money. Psalms 24:1 [The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof; the world and they that dwell therein.]

If we don’t understand the time;

  • We will misbehave
  • We will displease God: because we act in foolish ways
  • We will not for ourselves: this is the time for fellowship. Some people are in serious situations where they need succor.
  • We will lose our faith because of the pressures of life, attacks, manipulations, satanic input into people’s lives.

Jeremiah 8:1-7 [At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves: And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth. And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts. Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return? Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return. I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle. Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.]

The bible is still our standard, let’s never forget that. We are saved to serve. There are people in the church who are saved but struggle to serve. God comes first in everything we do – no matter our position. There are accomplished men in the secular world who are ushers in churches. A woman recently bought 35 SUVs for her pastors and spiritual leaders. There are accomplished men and women serving God. Let none of us feel we are too big to serve God.

Study the story behind Colgate.

Proverbs 8:14 [Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength]

Allow the Spirit of God lead you, stop leading yourself. There’s a way that seems right to a man but the end thereof is destruction. Lead the world rather than allowing the world lead you.

Some of us may be going through different issues. But let me say to us, that in the times we are talking about – understanding the times actually means recognizing the times, what it’s saying – it’s our responsibility to understand, accept and corporate with God’s timing knowing fully well He has made all things beautiful in His time. It is our responsibility not to be discouraged.

Habakkuk 2:3 [This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed. NLT]

Though it isn’t easy to wait, remember that they that wait on the Lord shall be strong. It shall come to pass. The fact you encounter delay does not mean God will not do it.

Delay does not mean denial.

God is working out something. It’s going to come out bigger and better. We must understand that the harvest is very plenty – the field is ripe for us to go harvest.

2 Timothy 4:2-4 [Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.]

When God is looking for you in your time, you will be found in Jesus name – Amen.
